Militarism v. Terrorism

                                            Militarism v. Terrorism   

 

 

The hot topic as I read and listen to media these days is "How will the Democratic Party pull itself together?"

 

Which is really an excuse not to discuss the Militarism  v. Terrorism Agendas of both major political parties-- Democrats and Republicans. John Kerry moved the party away from an anti-Militarist stance and accepted the Bushian debate frame in which he, Kerry, would hunt down and kill terrorists wherever they are sequestered. 

 

I guess Kerry now has decided that hyperbole must defer to Senate business and the status quo.  He also has decided not to question the Ohio vote, as if he had been running for himself, alone-- and not for a constituency of voters.  So, is this the same candidate to whose campaign I contributed?

 

By supporting Kerry in "the most important election in our lifetime", did we exercise our "last gasp" of citizens' rights?   Maybe.  Would Sharpton, Kucinich, or Dean have made for a better, more cogent losing candidate?  Maybe we needed a little more passion, a little less calculation.  Time will tell.

 

Perhaps, in time, we will traverse the "rhetoric of democracy" and create-- through our actions and by our action-- a social, economic, and political culture that dignifies all people and all peoples.  This is my hope-- and, I daresay, there are others who share this hope.

 

Life without hope is like "nectar in a sieve"; and hope without sustenance and dignity cannot live.
